Welcome to our Winter & Beyond edition of The Maples newsletter!

Elizabeth and Martin on the Hythe Pier

As we wake up, bleary-eyed after the festive season, it’s easy to want to hibernate until Springtime. But where’s the fun in that!

We’ve edged our noses out of the front door and realised that there’s plenty to keep us occupied, from strolls in the winter sun to exploring the sales in Southampton. And we’ve walked the plank (and attempted to drive the train) down Hythe Pier. Here we’ll share what we’ve found to keep the duvet at bay in and around The Maples.

Keeping it local…

We love to buy local produce, as you know, and it’s just a short stroll to Hythe for juicy and fresh fruit and veg from Grove Gardens. Having been in the village for longer than anyone can remember, they supply the juiciest tomatoes and the most marvellous mushrooms…

If you have a celebration coming up, where you’d value extra special attention to detail, then we’d love to hear from you to discuss your specific requirements. Pop in, call 023 8178 2640 or email enquiries@hythebedandbreakfast.co.uk

See you soon!

Love is in the air!

With Valentine’s Day just two weeks away it’s time to get planning! Whether your idea of romance is a walk along the beach, a candlelit dinner or a theatre trip, there’s something here for every couple.

If a delicious meal will delight your darling then Hythe and the surrounding area can offer a globetrotting selection from ThaiIndianItalian and American. And if you’d prefer something more traditional, or pub grub, then there’s EbenezersThe Boathouse or The Lord Nelson.

And why not lay on something unusual for your Valentine: maybe a chauffeur driven car to the destination of your choice plus some flowers, champagne and chocs in your room (arranged on your behalf by us, of course). And if you’d rather stay put here at The Maples we can always lay on an afternoon tea.

And don’t forget Mother’s Day…

Miss Saigon

From 21st February until 17th March this acclaimed musical will be showing at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. Or if Mum prefers the ballet, a Comedian or something completely different, there are plenty of shows to choose from throughout the year, and dinner’s available in the Ovation theatre restaurant too!

Messing about on the water

Seeing as we’re sooo close to the water here at The Maples, you could opt for a nautical theme to treat Mum? There are a number of companies that provide excursions and we can offer advice depending on any ideas that you have. Blue Funnel Cruises provide a number of events throughout the year, Solent Boat Chartering give bespoke tours, and then there’s the Red Funnel to take you on an Isle of Wight day trip.

The Great Outdoors

For those that are looking for an activity to keep them out of mischief there’s plenty to do at Calshot. Not only is there a stoney beach, perfect for windsurfing and other watery pursuits, but there’s the Calshot Activity Centre where you can venture up the climbing wall, ski down the indoor dry slope, or cycle around the velodrome. And they offer a wide range of courses for those who want to learn something new.

But if just thinking about all that exercise is making you feel puffed, then how about a nose around Calshot Castle? This artillery fort, built by Henry VIII to defend the sea passage to Southampton, was recently used as a Navy and RAF base.
